Hardwired
You will find as you learn how to trade that it’s not enough to be told something, then read about it, then experience it in the market. Taken cumulatively that is still just one impression. In order to have a method, or a trading tool truly hardwired into your head takes many, many impressions, or ideally many months or even years of demo trading. It’s not enough to say you believe in a method, or in yourself, you have to subconsciously know it, and that takes repetition, which takes time. Regardless of how much you read, and or are told about how a method or indicator works, you will very likely still make mistakes in the execution of it. This happens for many reasons, most of which has very little to do with the market and much to do with your own experiences. The saying “the map is not the territory” make so much sense from a trading perspective. By that I mean you can study the map beforehand all you want, but once they drop you into the valley – the territory -- to execute your mission, it is a completely different experience, making your own behavior less predictable. I had a client say to me that he knew he needed to understand the method, but that he was really looking forward to acquiring the “intuition” of a successful trader as soon as he could. I knew that was a red flag, because I once thought the same thing. I now know that I should not even have considered that my intuition could play a part in trading, until I had the mechanics of a method down cold – meaning I had 100’s of demo trades logged. I also knew that it would be hard to tell him this, because just as Bill Williams just smiled at my own early declarations of future trading prowess, I knew the client would not listen, because it was not what he wanted to hear. And that’s what it comes down to. Over ninety percent of people who attempt to trade turn out to be losers, despite success in previous endeavors, because they won’t survive long enough to finally figure out to quit thinking so much about it and keep on demoing.
