Australian employment surged in May, fueled by a large uptick in full-time jobs, underscoring a strong labor recovery through the first half of 2017. In seasonally adjusted terms, overall employment rose by 42,000 last month, following a gain of 37,400 in April, the national statistics bureau said in a report on Thursday. That was the sixth increase of the past seven months. Economists in a median estimate forecast a gain of 9,700 from April.
