Price increases at UK retailers fell in early May to their lowest level in more than two years, adding to signs of an improving economic outlook. The rise in shop prices slowed to 0.6% in the first week of May, its lowest since the end of 2021, the British Retail Consortium said on Tuesday. That was below the category’s three-month average of 0.9% and its advance of 0.8% in the same period last month. Inflation is also falling in other categories in the BRC-NielsenIQ index. Increases in food prices slowed to 3.2% in the May survey ...

One year on from the peak, shop price inflation levels are showing signs of normalising, providing relief to households. Both food and non-food have seen shop inflation rates ease to more manageable levels. In April, non-food prices fell, especially in clothing and footwear, where retailers ramped up promotions to encourage consumer spend. Food inflation slowed for the 12th consecutive month, as fresh products such as butter, fish and fruits, continued to fall in price due to easing input costs and intense competition between ...

Tumbling energy costs and a price war between Britain’s supermarkets have slowed food inflation to its lowest rate for nearly two years in a boost for households trying to cope on stretched budgets. The cost of meat, fish and fruit dipped in February, meaning food prices rose 5% on last year, down from 6.1% in January and the lowest since May 2022, according to the British Retail Consortium (BRC) shop price index. Although the figures show prices are still rising, the rate is far lower than the double-digit increases consumers have ...

Inflation in UK stores fell to the lowest level in more than 18 months in another sign that the cost-of-living crisis is starting to ease. Shop prices were 2.9% higher year-on-year in January compared with a 4.3% annual increase in December, the British Retail Consortium said Tuesday. That’s the lowest since May 2022 as retailers offered heavy discounts to attract shoppers. The data is encouraging after a surprise from the Office for National Statistics earlier this month showing UK inflation had picked up unexpectedly for the first ...

Overall shop price inflation remained steady in December. Households did have reason to celebrate as food inflation fell for the eighth consecutive month thanks to retailers’ efforts to bring down prices in the run-up to Christmas. There was cause for merriment as prices of wine, port and sherry fell on the month. Non-food products had a more challenging December, with price inflation rising again following retailers’ investment in November Black Friday discounting and ahead of the January sales. Retailers will continue to do all ...

Inflation in UK shops has fallen to a 17-month low as retailers fight to attract shoppers ahead of the crucial holiday period. The British Retail Consortium said Tuesday that inflation fell 0.9 percentage points in November to 4.3%, the lowest level since June 2022. It’s the sixth-straight month that the trade association has recorded declines. However, the lobby group said there was no guarantee that inflation would keep falling, with higher taxes and an increase in the minimum wage pushing up costs. In the Autumn Statement last ...
- From brc.org.uk|Oct 2, 2023
Food prices dropped on the previous month for the first time in over two years because of fierce competition between retailers. This brought year-on-year food inflation down to single digits and contributed to the fifth consecutive monthly fall in the headline rate, helped by easing cost pressures. Customers who bought dairy, margarine, fish and vegetables – all typically own-brand lines – will have found lower prices compared to last month. Households also benefitted from price cuts for school uniforms and other back-to-school ...

Price rises in British shops have slowed to their lowest rate of growth since October, according to the British Retail Consortium. The BRC said on Tuesday that prices rose 6.9 per cent in the year to August, down from 8.4 per cent in July. The main reason was that prices of fresh food were increasing less rapidly, the BRC said. Fresh food inflation slowed to 11.6 per cent in August, down from 14.3 per cent in July. The BRC added that inflation for non-food items was unchanged at 4.7 per cent this month. "Better news for consumers as ...
