The ANZ World Commodity Price Index lifted 1.1% m/m in May as stronger dairy and aluminium prices offset lower returns for meat and horticultural produce. Dairy auction prices pulled back a bit overnight. Overall prices were down 2.3% and the key whole milk powder (WMP) prices fell 2.8%. This auction was weaker than recent auctions but more in line with recent weaker futures market trends and particularly the outcome of the GDT Pulse auction held on 27 February. Although dairy prices rose a modest +0.5% today from two weeks ago, those looking ahead see a track higher. Chinese buyers returned and Chinese demand is creeping up to long term averages. Dairy auction prices surprised and posted solid gains overnight. Overall prices were up 4.2%, while key whole milk powder (WMP) prices lifted 3.4%. The result was broad based as almost all products posted price rises. Butter and cheese prices led the way, surging 10.3% and 6.3% respectively – further supporting those strong WMP prices.
