The global financial crisis has been weighing heavily on the world economy since 2007. The crisis was severe. In most advanced countries, the recovery has been weak in historical comparison. Many of these economies are struggling hard to regain the jobs lost during the last four years (slide 1). 1 The crisis originated in the bursting of a house price bubble driven by an excessive credit expansion in the US, which eventually pushed the global financial system to the brink of collapse.
