DislikedSomething I have noticed on the whole Linux/Windows thing is that numerical code generated by g++ runs an order of magnitude faster than code generated by VS2008. But you can't beat VS2008 for a development/debug environment, I develop on Windows then compile the code on my Linux box, the code differences between the two platforms are small when you use Boost.Ignored
Have you got any references for that? I know it's exactly the other way around. VC++ is well known for it's top notch optimizer (even without stuff like WPO and PGO). Here, I have a reference: http://www.osnews.com/img/5602/results.jpg It seems that even C# is faster than GCC. Yes, the benchmark is not very recent. But I doubt that the situation changed.
Another proof, the Windows Firefox binary compiled with VC++ and run in Wine is faster than native Firefox compiled by gcc for Linux http://www.tuxradar.com/content/brow...-linux-firefox
